The Sea review
Melanie C’ career development
Melanie C is one of those performers, whose records conquered charts all around the world in 1994. Spice Girls got the acknowledgment and love of listeners due to their super hit song Wannabe, which became the first and probably the most important step in their career. Spice Girls released three amazing albums and then the members of the most successful girls group of all times decided to try their luck in solo careers. The time showed that the listeners’ interest for the performers’ creativity remained high. Melanie C’ studio attempts deserve some special attention – her debut solo work Northern Star peaked at the top of charts immediately, and about a million of copies was sold just in Great Britain. Actually it did not turn out to be a big surprise, as soon as the singer had always been really dedicated to the creative process and she got her well deserved reputation of a talented performer and an incredibly talented composer for a good reason. Pop-music can be different – calm, energetic, minor or major. Melanie C juggles these characteristic in an easy way; she gets a great assistance from her talent and knowledge that she had got during the studying at the college of music and theatre art. Melanie C chose her way a long time ago, and to the great joy of her fans she is definitely not going to change it.
Many waves of The Sea
Melanie C called The Sea quite a diversified album. Of course, the main accent was put on the pop-music, however the singer decided to try musical experiments. Thereby a listener will find here both romantic ballads and notes of rock, but first things first. The Sea’s opening act is a measured composition Think About It, which is followed by the more energetic track Burn. In the chorus of Burn the performer demonstrates her amazing vocal skills in a really fancy way. By the way, it is worth mentioning that the bass-guitar sounds more in rock-style, than in pop-music style. Get Out Of Here will please listeners by the rememberable melody and powerful sound. Definitely, The Sea shows Melanie C’ transfer to the rock and even blues. Actually the transit turned out to be successful indeed: this music, to some extend, was a kind of experimental for the ex-member of Spice Girls, but it harmonizes with her voice really way. The main track of the record, The Sea, is another proof of that. Once again the singer’s musical intuition was of a great help. Melanie had an original plan to record a diverse long play, but with the strong basis of pop-music. All in all, she created an incredibly pleasant crossover.
What kind of experiments are going to appear in the future?
So, the long-awaited release of The Sea brought a big number of nice surprises. This includes an amazing rich renewed sound, traditionally high-class arrangements and fascinating atmosphere. Melanie C let us all know that the pop-music can open infinite opportunities for the following integration of many styles. Elements of rock, blues and even rhythm and blues found their place in the singer’s compositions. It is marvelous, but all these musical directions do not conflict with each other. On the contrary, they complete each other. And there is no doubt that there is a great reason why Melanie C is considered to be an extremely talented composer. More than ten songs, which had been created with her participation, already conquered the chart of Great Britain. And it seems that this number is about to increase - The Sea and twelve amazing tracks have all the chances to peak at the very top of charts. The album has it all: romantic acoustic songs, drive rock and sensual ballads, so any listener will be able to find and choose the right composition for any mood.
