Breakthrough
Studio Album by Colbie Caillat released in 2009Breakthrough review
The things remain sunny, beautiful and peaceful with Colbie Caillat
If you still doubt that becoming a star with the help of an Internet page one can continue a successful music career then Colbie Caillat’s example is what you need to consider. This girl goes on surprising her fans with the new portions of love lyrics, classic for a pretty young female suffering from no inferiority complex. Caillat was born and raised in sunny California and is the daughter of a music producer Ken Caillat who certainly helps her in everything. Thus Colbie’s debut album Coco was released in 2007 and he co-produced it and of course has not remained aside today when the singer’s sophomore effort Breakthrough is released. Some may think at once that such a declaration in the record’s title can mean significant changes in the performer’s life or creative work but do not let it confuse you – the things remain quite the same sunny, beautiful and peaceful in Colbie Caillat’s life and creative work. The record Breakthrough, too, is not too different from the debut work, if only with even higher level of recording and the 24 year old performer’s even gentler vocals.
Breakthrough has included only 12 out of 50 written for it
Colbie has invented an unusual way of selecting the best songs for the first album asking the fans’ opinion. As the artist states herself it is very important for her to make the fans take an immediate part in the proccess of creating the album so this time, too, she has not refused this idea. Moreover, last year the singer organized an improvized ‘writing camp’ in Hawaii where she invited her old acquaintances Jason Reeves, Mikal Blue and American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. The team wrote 50 songs, recorded 20 of them and then performed them in front of a small audience. The album’s definitive variant included 12 compositions for which the viewers had voted – some of Breaktrhough editions include several bonus tracks. One should note the single Fallin' For You with a very contagious rhythm, an amazing love confession and You Got Me with a text which is sure to make you smile more than once and a wonderful optimistic song Rainbow. The track featuring Jason Reeves Droplets pleases with the most beautiful instrumental background and a gentle vocal duet. In this connection one should mention the song Lucky performed with Jason Mraz, it is also included in his album We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things. Of course Colbie Caillat’s sweet vocals please throughout Breakthrough, it is ringing and caressing the ear so it seems that one can enjoy youth and strong emotions all life long.
Music for all generations
It goes without saying that the greater part of songs on Breakthrough are devoted to the relationships with the opposite sex: nice, mysterious, strong, weak, interesting, boring, clumsy, stylish, young, grown-up – the guys can be so different so why not sing about it? Besides Colbie goes on expressing her simple and close to many views on life, telling that one should appreciate each moment spent with the one you love. On the whole these songs are perfect to play them as an unoffensive background for a pleasant conversation, they can also be listen to when you are alone, watching the sunset sitting in the chair in front of your country house, or at a family picnic. Colbie Caillat knows how to make music that would suit all generations and understood by everyone who once was in love. A romantic guitar – on two tracks the artist sings with the accompaniment performed by guitarist David Becker who played with her father – makes these songs even more soulful, but her voice would sound soft and nice even a cappella. Perhaps Colbie’s next creation will be more unexpected, and whatever happens, this singer definitely will not fail to find her listener.
