Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors review

The King is dead. Long live the King!

Many connoisseurs of rap of not so distant 90s had a unique opportunity to evaluate the technique of Big Boi. And if they try to get their memory involved and seek for cassette recordings, they probably will find and recollect such songs like Ms. Jackson, Hey Ya! and The Way You Move. At the time, they made a lot of noise in the charts and discos, in the clubs and in cars parked in the hood. Highly esteemed group called OutKast now is silent and let's hope that it is not forever. The flag of succession is now in the hands of the Big Boi, because, apparently, comrade Andre Lauren Benjamin, Big Boi's colleague in this erstwhile explosive duo decided not to go for a solo career. Although he did not completely gone from the scene, and we are still able to meet him, but now in duets with Beyoncй in the song Party and in the trio of Young Jeezy, Jay-Z and Andre 3000 in the song I Do. And what's up with Big Boi? Meanwhile he provided a transitional album Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, and is now entirely in his own free flight. On the album, in addition to Big Boi we met his colleagues of the music shop. Here we have Sleepy Brown, Phantogram, TI, Ludacris, Kid Cudi, Little Dragon, Killer Mike, Kelly Rowland, A $ AP Rocky, B.o.B., Wavves and more. Great company has gathered. In terms of style everything is clear – it is rap, but in addition to aggressive southern hip-hop, Detroit bassline, the rapper promises elements of indie style and funk.

Big Boi’s performance, or Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors

Let the performance begin. The first track is an intro from Big Boi, who appears in a very bizarre way, if comparing to modern rap bandstand. But it may seem bizarre to those who are new to such multifaceted personality as Big Boi and creations of the OutKast group. Big Boi is a bully and a poet, a husband and a father, an atheist and a philosopher ... we can list all of his roles endlessly. So he says in the intro - if ya'll don't know me by now, ya'll ain't gonna 'never know me. This philosophical track passes its mood to the next song - The Thickets, which begins with a beautiful, deep space sound, but then turns into moving rap bravado. We see a child of destiny on the stage and there is not a cue for the onetime philosophizing. Naturally, everything in the song is sent to hell, and nobody cares about nothing. And it should be noted that one-third of the entire album is written in such a hedonistic spirit. The culmination of this atmosphere is a track In The A. The explosive and dynamic, it truly draws us into the world of eternal bliss and ignorance. The problem of personal relationships, or rather a problem to build such being a rap star, is presented in the She Hates Me - a song that touches excessive weed passion, constant traveling, and the problem of workaholism as well. We guess that something is rotten in the State of Denmark. The climax of the album is the song Descending, of course, which being atypical in terms of sound and content brings us back to the first track and continues its philosophical and melancholic mood. And well it is not a sad note using which Big Boi ends his album, but there is a light and unrestrained Gossip track and romantic She Said OK to finish it all.

Revival of OutKast?

Big Boi has returned to us in the extravagant packaging of deep, soulful rapping, variety of texts, and no less mysterious and versatile sound. It is everything that we appreciated and loved in OutKast. It is a pity that such a group has suspended its activities ... the group that influenced the music, and which Stankonia album left its indelible, eternal mark on the field of not only rap music, but also in the history of music in general. For those efforts and the emotions that Big Boi puts in his songs we should all say thank you and express to him a permanent respect. OutKast is alive until their business is alive. The album is strong, the album was recorded in the style, but for some reason you are longing to hear a second voice. After all, they worked together for so long ... and like it or not they complemented each other, and it is clear that on the new Big Boi's album Andre 3000 would be quite on point. Talking about Big Boi, well, he proved that he still has the strength to continue the business begun in the distant 90s. The philosophy of the album and its unique melody sometimes run out of accord with the rampant wild songs, but it is made in order just to highlight the true beauty of the album. Black is well defined on white, as white on black. On the album, all the topics are interwoven in a remarkable and sophisticated game of text and music, emotions and philosophy known and subjected to only one person – Big Boi.
