Alanis Morissette
Biography
Alanis Nadine Morissette was born in Ottawa in 1974, into a family with Hungarian and French-Canadian roots. Since her early years, the girl wanted to become only a singer. She started to play the piano at age six. Alanis wrote her first song in 1984 and sent it to local folk-singer Lindsey Morgan, who proposed his help to the artist. When Alanis visited New York, she learned about the popular USA talent show Star Search and decided to take part in it - but she lost after the first tour. In 1988, Alanis singed a deal with MCA Publishing and got down to her first record. Under the pseudonym Alanis, she released the self-titled dance pop album only in Canada where it got the twice-platinum status. In the same 1991, she created the follow-up Now Is The Time, which featured ballad-type compositions with more sincere and deep lyrics. The disc was also released only in Canada and reached less success than its predecessor. In 1993, Alanis moved to Toronto to be acquainted to the local musical circles. However, the artist was disappointed at the results and moved to Los Angeles.
In Los Angeles, she met producer and composer Glen Ballard. Their collaboration proved to be a fruitful one - in 1995, the artist signed to Maverick Records and recorded the disc Jagged Little Pill. This tuneful and emotional rock album traditionally in considered the debut of Alanis. It produced such hits as You Oughta Know, recorded with Flee and Dave Navarro from Red Hot Chili Peppers, All I Really Want and Hand in My Pocket. The singer headed on a support tour for the Jagged Little Pill. In 1996, Morissette, exhausted by touring, moved to India for six weeks with her close persons. In 1998, the artist recorded the Uninvited song for the City Of Angels film. The same year, she released the new creation - Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, on which Alanis changed the style of her songs - she made the sound lighter and eliminated the chorus on some tracks. In 1999, the acoustic album MTV Unplugged (in the format of the eponymous program) saw light, propelling the hit That I Would Be Good. Around the same time, Alanis played several minor roles in the cinema and took part in the scandalous theater work Monologues Of Vagina. After four years of silence, the artist produced her third studio attempt Under Rug Swept with moderate hits Hands Clean, So Unsexy and Precious Illinois.
In 2002, the Feast On Scraps also saw light. It contained eight earlier not-released songs by Alanis and her concert in Rotterdam. In 2004, Morissette recorded the disc So-Called Chaos with the rock hits Everything, which contained course words, Out Is Through and Eight Easy Steps. In summer, she toured with Barenaked Ladies along Canada and the US. The same year, her engagement with Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds became public. In 2005, Morissette issued the unplugged version of her world debut Jagged Little Pill Acoustic. The same year she summarized her creativity with the best hits compilation The Collection. In the beginning of 2007, Morissette and Reynolds officially parted, while in May 2008, Reynolds was already engaged to actress Scarlett Johansson. In 2007, Morissette performed for the listeners two songs for her upcoming long-play Flavors Of Entanglement, which saw light in June 2008. This unique album, built on contrasts and self-produced by Alanis, is rightfully acknowledged as one of her best works ever.
