The songwriter with an absolute talent

Pete Yorn is a real example of a self-made man. Starting his career as a drummer, a New-Jersey native decided to go for singing and songwriting to win a contract with Columbia Records for impromptu performance of his song Life on a Chain. After moving to Los Angeles in 2000, he began writing music for films and TV. He wrote music for such movies as Me, Myself, & Irene, Elektra, television series Dawson’s Creek. Yorn co-produced his 2001 solo debut album, Musicforthemorningafter, with Brad Wood (Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, Sunny Day Real Estate) and R. Walt Vincent, while playing the bulk of the instruments himself. All critics agree that Yorn is an exceptionally gifted songwriter, as they granted elated reviews to the songs on Musicforthemorningafter and its follow-up, 2003's Day I Forgot. After releasing an excellent live CD, now comes the third studio album, Nightcrawler.

The long awaited album

Despite the title that might suggest something a bit more dark and eerie, Yorn creates a rich, warm and lively sound. Undoubtedly, having produced some of the most complex songs of his career, Yorn finally reaches a sound that is genuinely him, still writing outstanding rock songs full of deep feeling. It is a solid record that brings forward his potential of both singer and songwriter. Pete Yorn has worked with five separate producers, which accounts for the variety of styles on the Nightcrawler. Butch Walker, who has worked with Pink, Avril Lavigne and Lindsay Lohan, now made a good transition to Pete Yorn. The first song on the album, Vampyre, moves from the haunted vocals to the electric guitar outbreak and booming drums. For Us features Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl on drums with his most unique and inspired old-school play. A classic ballad of the album is The Man, an outstanding country song, featuring The Dixie Chicks’ Martie Maguire and Natalie Maines. With its fantastic interplay of fiddle and piano cords, the track is sure to be one of the album’s highlights. A really melodic song Undercover introduces amazing synthesized percussions. Splendid Isolation is a tribute to the late songwriter Warren Zevon. The song is full of guitar passages and brings out all the power of Yorn’s voice.

While the variety of styles on the Nightcrawler might suggest that the record is somewhat transitional in the career of Pete Yorn, this is not quite true. The artist feels quite confident of his creation, which insures that everyone can find a track exactly to his liking. Yorn has firmly positioned himself on the music arena as an unusual artist with a unique sound and recognizable lyrics, therefore, there can be no doubt that this album is a great success among millions of admirers. Proceeding in the same manner, it is but natural to assume that Pete Yorn is sure to astonish us with new wilder, sincerer and more stylish creations.
