The story of Wilson Phillips
Sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson and their friend Chynna Phillips were born and grew up in Southern California. In the very childhood they all have fallen in love with music, and of course they began trying their luck and strength in the field of performing and songwriting. And they simply could not ignore the art at all, as soon as the future singers’ parents are famous musicians. Brian Wilson from the legendary The Beach Boys is the sisters’ father, and Chynna is a daughter of John and Michelle Phillips from not less legendary band The Mamas & the Papas. The young performers managed to succeed in the creative process and with time they even developed their own unique system of vocal harmonies, which became the most significant feature of the band. Actually, that was not a surprise, after all, because Wilson sisters and Chynna Phillips know each other really well, which means that their mutual understanding is incredible. Back in 1989 the trio signed a contract with SBK Records, and only a year later the debut self-titled long play Wilson Phillips saw the light. That record proved to be an excellent starting point for the trio and definitely only a few artists can be proud of such a successful debut. Nowadays the album has a Multiplatinum status, but it helped Wilson Phillips to find their place in the sun, and that is no doubt much more important. The release of the freshest creation of the band took place in 2012, and now it is the perfect time to get acquainted with Dedicated.
Dedicated presents a dozen of hits
The new long play is opened by a very famous composition by The Mamas & the Papas - California Dreamin’. The trio performed the song originally presented by Chynna’s parents just perfectly. In the aspect of arrangements you will not find any surprises, as soon as everything is created in the best traditions of soft rock, and at the same time the artists’ vocals got the incredible freedom. The next song on the album is another well-known track called Wouldn't It Be Nice of the great band The Beach Boys. Wilson sisters and Phillips managed to preserve the impressive positive attitude of that song, and more than that – they even added some charm – the singers’ vocals keep on boggling the imagination. Listeners will not find operetic works, but they will surely get a lot of positive emotions from high class performance and the trio’s imagination. There is a good and tricky question – how can one make the initially interesting track more interesting? It seems that it is possible, after all. Just a little bit of fantasy and performing skills and voila – the old song got the brand new sound. Thereby the time-tested hits, including such masterpieces as Dedicated To The One I Love, Don't Worry Baby and many others had been given new sound, but they did not lose their charm. One of the most recognizable songs of The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations was smartly chosen as a great way to end the long play: Wilson Phillips brought to their fans a fascinating a capella piece.
Dedicated is an album for connoisseurs of vocal harmonies
It is doubtless that bright and distinctive creativity of Wilson Phillips could not be ignored by the huge audience. The confident start of a career, then a moment of sadness for the fans – the Californian trio froze the activity for a while, which was connected with the solo projects of its members, and, finally, the long-awaited reunion. Wilson Phillips were nominated for various prestigious awards, including Grammy and American Music Awards, which is quite an achievement by itself. Wilson Phillips have released only five studio albums since 1990, however they emphasized the quality, first of all. Luckily, the situation has not changed in 2012. The amazing trio Wilson Phillips keeps on pleasing their faithful fans with a sincere creativity. Do not mind that Dedicated consists of old compositions: they all got fresh and renewed sound – in other words, they got a new life. Wonderful compilation of twelve time-tested rock hits will be enjoyed by all lovers of emotional music, because performed by Wilson Phillips these songs became even more vivid and expressive.
