Spirit In The Room review

Tom Jones and his own rhythm and blues

Tom Jones started his career in the sixties of the previous century, when the incredibly loud and audacious rock’n’roll was just setting up its path all around the world. Nevertheless, Jones knew exactly, what kind of music would help him to demonstrate all his creative potential. Thereby the artist preferred to create within limits of very melodiousness and sensitive genres, such as rhythm and blues, pop-music and blues. The time showed that these very musical directions did not lose their topicality and importance. Tom Jones’ debut album titled Along Came Jones saw the light in 1965 and it immediately attracted attention of lovers of sincere music, charged with real emotions and feelings. Jones’ debut proved to be so notable and strong that he was nominated to the Grammy Award in the category the Best New Artist. It was quite an impressive beginning of a career, wasn’t it? Two years later Tom Jones gave his first concert in Las Vegas, and obviously it became a new starting point for the artist. The point is that the musician was received by the audience so well that he gradually moved over the studio work and stuck to live performances. His shows always gathered full house, and this is the best possible proof of listeners’ interest and admiration. Actually, Jones did not forget about recording new albums, and in 2012 he issued a fresh long play titled Spirit In The Room.

Thoughtful Spirit In The Room

The fresh album from maestro Jones proved to be a solid one, even in spite of the great many of moods presented on it. Its opening act is a very calm, mid-tempo composition called Tower Of Song. It is in minor chords, but it arranges for leisured thoughts. Minimum amounts of accompaniment and maximum attention to Jones’ vocals: such a deal seems to be successful in all aspects. Then comes another calm song (I Want To) Come Home, which was definitely created with the help of American sunny country music. Well, the track Hit Or Miss is more international act, as soon as it is performed in the style of pop-rock. A vivid song Love And Blessings takes a notable and well-deserved place in the album and it is quite distinctive due to its unique mood and rememberable drums part. The song Travelling Shoes seems to absorb all the best features of rock and country, and as the result it got unique attitude and sound. All in all it is rather obvious that the culture of the US had a huge impact on Tom Jones, and it is not certainly sure who got more benefits from that collaboration. Country motives were intertwined with pop-music, which is interesting by itself, but of course special charm is given to songs by Jones’ vocals. The singer skillfully delivers any feelings, from joy to melancholy.

Sincere music

Tom Jones is loved by his faithful fans for his dedication to art and discipline of excellence. It does not matter if it is studio work or direct communication with the audience from the stage – Jones always makes sure to do his best. His shows in Las Vegas became one of the brightest features of that motley city and they always attracted lots of people. In fact, Tom’s studio records have generated lots of buzz as well among lovers of high quality pop-music. But this definition is very distant from the contemporary pop’s essence. Jones’ creativity is absolutely different. It is something uniting several generations at once, in aspects of both music and lyrics: the performer sings about eternal values, about relationships between people. Every single track is interesting in its own way, and every song has its distinctive combination of genres, including country, blues or soft rock. This way or another, Spirit In The Room flows in literally one breath. You will find here vivid compositions and mid-tempo songs, which demonstrate all Tom Jones’ skills and charm. Full length of Spirit In The is not remarkable, but everything is performed on the traditional highest level. This record is recommended to lovers of sincere music, first of all.
