Chasing Lights review
The new girl band The Saturdays
In 90s of the twentieth century, the witty producers realized that the astonishing success of the boy bands could be counter parted by the identical pop bands, fully consisting of girls. When this niche was still fully free, the first band of this type emerged - the legendary Spice Girls. Since that moment, much time passed, but the success formula - attractive pop motifs, cute vocalists and thought-out image - still works well. And it is sure to work this way, till there are interested in music teenagers. The British pop band The Saturdays, consisting of five charming girls, was formed in 2007 under the umbrella of the label Fascination Records, which is the department of the Polydor studio. The command includes Frankie Sandford, Rochelle Wiseman, Vanessa White, Mollie King and Una Healy. Some of the singers already had scenic experience before The Saturdays - thus, Frankie and Rochelle earlier were the part of the S Club Juniors band, which disbanded. The oldest of the participants, Una, is twenty-seven years old, while the youngest - Vanessa - is nineteen. Soon after the formation, the artists accompanied the famous pop command Girls Aloud in their Tangled Up Tour, which took place this year. They worked over the material to their own album the same time. For now, the disc Chasings Lights finally came to the hands of the public.
Chasings Lights: professionalism and talent
Only having come into the scene, The Saturdays self-assuredly started to conquer the place under the sun in the British Chart. Thus, in July 2008, they debuted with the electronic-dance single If This Is Love, which, of cause, is present on the disc Chasings Lights. This rhythmical song immediately took the eighth position in the British chart and attracted moderate attention in Europe. The second single Up, which proved to be no ways less danceable and memorable, in October, was even more success than its predecessor was. As the release of the disc showed, two gorgeous singles are not the only attractions of the album Chasings Lights. The track Issues, having a stylish R&B slant, is noticeable for its sharp, straight-line lyrics. The pathetic ballad Lies will cheer the listeners with the catchy tune and excellent chorus; the same can be stated about the strong, qualitative track Work. The titling track of the disc Chasing Lights demonstrates us the young artists in the decisive and serious state of moods in the moment of parting with the too-controlling boyfriend, who does not let the girl make a step without his permission. The energetic electronic composition Set Me Off with the sexual vocals and highly frank text became one of the most impressing tracks on the long-play. Besides, in this tune each girl from the collective got the opportunity to show her vocals in a solo part. The song Fall is devoted to the topic, similar to Chasing Lights. The disc finishes with the remix for one of the brightest songs on the disc - Up (Wideboys Remix Edit).
The strong and self-assured debut by The Saturdays
Thanks to the musical experience of Frankie Sandford and Rochelle Wiseman, The Saturdays’ sound is highly professional and harmonic. The other girls also tried to do their best and succeeded. Beside the perfect winding dance tracks and lyrical ballads, one is sure to appreciate the girls’ bright, well-designed image. Working in one studio with Girls Aloud, The Saturdays are no ways the copy of this band - they perform their own and original material. Their tracks are more straightforward than the creativity by Girls Aloud, but have the same quantity of energy, while their music reminds of the earlier works by Sugababes. It is early to think, whether the artists would stay on the British scene and take a permanent place on it, or would prove to the stars of one disc - but the fact is that they have enough potential for the long-term and successful musical career. The proof of this statement is their wonderful debut pop album Chasings Lights, which is rather actively bought by the listeners for now. Filled with sincere and infectious songs, the first disc by The Saturdays will fit for both a joyful party and everyday listening. In spite of the fact that the young artists from The Saturdays do not enlarge the boundaries of today’s pop music by their creativity, they definitely found their own niche in it. One can also freely presume that the disc Chasings Lights can became one of the best pop releases of this year.
