We Are the Pipettes review

The Pipettes are full of self-esteem

The Pipettes is a girl pop band from Brighton, England, consisting of three frontwomen Gwenno, Rose and Becki. The rest of the band are guitarist Bobby, bassist Jon, keyboardist Seb and drummer Joe – the guys are also known as The Cassettes. The band appeared in mid 2004 and became popular very soon in England producing first singles and got signed to Memphis Industries. Before the release of their debut album We Are The Pipettes, the band has become famous for the live shows with the girls wearing polka dot dresses and performing a nicely staged synchronised choreography numbers. The unique style of The Pipettes resembles the traditional pop of the 1960s added a modern twist. Their first record with a lot of joyful notes and rather funny lyrics is a new candidate for the best pop album of this summer. The image of the girls is a nice contribution to the whole impression and even if you’ve never seen them it is easy to imagine happy smiling faces and to feel their positive emotions throughout the album. Yet in spite of this simplicity The Pipettes are full of self-esteem and it is worth while – they are smart girls knowing how to make men like them.

We Are The Pipettes sounds like a greatest hits collection

There are fourteen tracks on We Are The Pipettes and among them it is absolutely impossible to find a poor one as well as to pick out the best. It seems like it is not a debut album but a collection of The Pipettes’ greatest hits. The album opens with the title track We Are The Pipettes, a nice way for the band to introduce itself and for the listeners get a general idea of what The Pipettes is about. The following stylish track Pull Shapes reminds of the long forgotten 1960s but sounds refreshingly new, and the marvelous piano chords and orchestral elements on Why Did You Stay? emphasize the beautiful melody and harmonize well with the front singers vocals. The coquettish song Dirty Mind is refined with playful intonations and light instrumentation, while A Winter’s Sky presents a romantic anthem to the nature and love. The funny track Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me with great dance beats is one of the first singles and already a very popular song at many clubs in England and beyond. Other standouts on We Are The Pipettes are Because It’s Not Love (But It’s Still A Feeling), also a sympathetic flirt, a humorous complaint with a stupid boyfriend ABC and the closer I Love You, a new and successful attempt to open a girl’s heart to a boy.

This record is meant to bring joy, smiles and inspiration

The pop scene of the present days has long been missing a new girl band especially after the collapse of the Spice Girls. The Pipettes is a band that revives the notion of girl-power and brings a breath of a fresh air into the world of music. The debut We Are The Pipettes is sure to win everybody’s acclaim with its sharp humor and amazingly catchy melodies. As for the themes chosen – love, sex and expectation – they are close to most of us, and thus emotionally the album is also one to appeal to the audience. Combining the features of the past and the present in their music The Pipettes suits to more than one generation and the dancing rhythm of the band’s songs opens them a direct way to night clubs, parties and beaches. Apart from the joking and funny manner of presenting the relations between the opposite sexes, the authors of the songs have also considered some deeper questions such as growing up, fading friendship and enjoying life. In this respect you can either dance and dissolve in the hot rhythm or listen to the words and surprise how witty the girls of The Pipettes are, or, in the end, both. Whatever you do, this record is meant to bring you joy, smiles and inspiration.
