The Low Anthem

The story of the quartet The Low Anthem, one of the brightest representatives of indie-folk scene began in Rhode Island in 2006. Ben Miller and Jeff Prystowsky got acquainted at the jazz show and they found mutual understanding in practically no time. Young people found out that their musical preferences were much alike, so the decision to start a band and to try their luck was taken without further delays. In the fall of 2006 Ben and Jeff were joined by bluesman Dan Lefkowitz; however he left the band and moved to Arkansas in 2007. Nevertheless The Low Anthem became the trio again when Jocie Adams became the group’s permanent member in 2007.

The band’s debut self-titled album The Low Anthem was issued in 2006 and numerous connoisseurs of original sound immediately paid their attention to the young band that made a great start of their career. The Low Anthem pleased listeners with another work What The Crow Brings, which had been created at Ben’s and Jeff’s apartments. As the result the material got an incredible charm: lack of expensive equipment did not anyhow affect the record’s atmosphere.

The band moved to Block Island in 2008, where they spent ten days recording the compositions that were later included into the long play Oh My God, Charlie Darwin. That studio attempt got excellent reviews from the experts, while music lovers really enjoyed it as well. After its release the musicians toured a lot, and the performances in the United Kingdom were especially successful. Thus, the rockers signed contracts with Nonesuch Records and Bella Union, which was followed by re-mastering of Oh My God, Charlie Darwin. It is worth mentioning that this album did not lose its fascination at all. The Low Anthem kept on participating in various festivals in 2009, gaining a huge fan base, and during the European tour the trio was joined by an amazing musician and multiinstrumentalist Mat Davidson.

The Low Anthem’s members needed three years to prepare and record fresh material for the new long play. The quartet’s discography was enlarged by the traditionally strong studio attempt titled Smart Flesh, which had been created in an easy recognizable signature style. There is no doubt that such rememberable compositions as Ghost Woman Blues, Hey, All You Hippies and many others will be interesting not only for The Low Anthem’s old fans, but also for those who had not chance to get acquainted with that band’s creativity yet.
