Texas
Biography
Texas are a rock band from Glasgow, formed by Johnny McElhone in 1986. The band took its name from Wim Wenders movie Paris, Texas. Debut performance of the group took place in 1988, and first EP was released in 1989, but it failed to hit the charts. Later in 1989 single I Don't Want a Lover appeared, charting at number 8 on the UK Singles Charts. Moreover, this composition became one of the biggest songs of the year, and brought Texas to world fame. The debut album Southside was released in 1989 and that record charted at number 3 on the UK Album Charts.
In 1991 the second studio album Mothers Heaven appeared, and singles from that record were not so successful to get to the highest positions in charts, but they got fair reviews from musical experts. The third Texas studio work titled Ricks Road appeared in 1993 and turned out to be more successful than Mothers Heaven. In 1997 the international hit Say What You Want was released, and it became number 3 UK Singles Charts. In 1997 Texas issued fourth album White on Blonde, which proved to be multi-platinum and became number 1 on UK Album Charts. In May 1999 album The Hush appeared, and as its predecessor White On Blonde, it charted at number 1 on the UK Album Charts. A bit later the single Summer Son was issued, which conquered the radio airplay not only in Great Britain, but also in other European countries. Summer Son is considered to be one of the most recognizable Texas songs.
In 2000 Texas released the compilation of the best songs titled The Greatest Hits, which also included several new compositions. That record, just as White on Blonde and The Hush went to number 1 in the United Kingdom. In September 2002, Spiteri gave birth to her daughter Mysty Kyd, but it did not hold her up from working on sixth studio album. The long awaited record Careful What You Wish For was issued in October 2003, and it became number 5 on UK Albums Chart. Soon it was certified Gold: more than 100,000 copies were sold in the United Kingdom. Record Red Book was released in 2005. Album The BBC Sessions that included tracks recorded live at the BBC studios in London appeared in 2007, and in 2008 Sharleen Spiteri started a solo career. Her debut album Melody was issued in 2009, and the second record The Movie Songbook appeared in 2010.
On 11 September 2009 Ally McErlaine aged 41 was hospitalized with massive brain aneurysm. In February 2010 he was recovering, and when he asked Sharleen Spiteri about what was going on with Texas, she answered that everything was up to him. Ally McErlaine’s wish was to get back into the studio to start working on the new album.
