Tegan And Sara: music is all that counts

The Tegan And Sara band do not even seem to need to work hard on their music to bring crowds to their shows and to sell their albums in numbers. And the reason is the main personages of this Canadian project, twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin, which is quite a rаre thing to find. Moreover, media takes and gives it for granted that the both of the sisters share an untraditional sexual orientation, although none has ever given an official comment on that, and the basis for that can be nothing but slight hints in some of the songs. Nevertheless, listeners who are not very sophisticated or demanding in music are likely, at least out of sheer curiosity, to want to try one or two songs by Tegan And Sara, since such people are on the lineup. At the same time, the ensemble does not pay so much attention to making an image or scandalous reputation as it does to making a high quality music product. And Tegan And Sara fans may argue endlessly which is the best album the band has ever made, but one thing they all agree on is that these musicians are always on a creative quest.

Top quality product from excellent producers

The new chapter of musical adventures experienced by Tegan And Sara is called Heartthrob; and those who have been following the ensemble for quite a while understand that the Canadians have come to this music not spontaneously, but for the right reason. As a matter of fact, the Quins, who once used to play indie rock, have quite smoothly, without making much noise or fuss, moved over to indie pop. The exterior, the format of the fresh CD does remind of a classic bombastic pop-music album, with its ten tracks of pretty much the same durations and under pretty banal titles. And there will be those who, after a quick glance at this offer, may put it aside and go on. Yet it is not as simple as it may seem. You have got to at least listen to the beginning to make sure, right? But once you have a taste of the explosive single Closer, you will hardly want to turn the record off. The song with a winning chorus like this one looked very promising on paper, but it was mature producers who utilized every bit of its potential. These people have worked with starts like Dr. Dre, Pink, and Eminem. Closer is not only an infectious main theme, but a great constellation of digital stars on the background, a real universe of synthetic sound one cannot but admire.

Heartthrob: variety of good music

Production is an essential element, and Heartthrob is a perfect illustration to this point. Working in one team with fantastic specialists, Tegan And Sara executed the mandatory part triumphantly as they recorded future pop hits like I Am Not Your Hero, How Come You Don’t Want Me, and Shock To Your System. These songs stand out for their thick and vibrating sound enriched with scattered synthesizers, and powerful choruses, which is everything a new radio sensation needs to have. However, the same producers did a great job to make the material of a different kind sound just as impressive. Mighty bass lines of Drove Me Wild deafen you and drive you on to the dance floor, while Love They Say, on the contrary, caresses with sweet acoustics and worn-out love phrases. Now, I Am All Messed Up makes a confident move across into the R&B territory to the balladry piano-led soundtrack. All in all, Heartthrob can and must be taken as the band’s most mature and consistent work of all those made to be pop-music products. The present album is reasonably eclectic, loaded with pleasant and interesting melodies, and executed at the top level. This CD will shake the opinions of those who deny pop music entirely.
