Shayne Ward review

Shayne Ward attempts to prove his worth as a bona fide singer

Shayne Ward was a sales assistant from Manchester who had the pleasure of celebrating his 21st birthday while residing in the X Factor house. Shayne Ward won the X Factor final on Saturday 17th of December 2005 singing Judy Garland’s Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Johnny Mathis’ When A Child Is Born and Daniel Bedingfield’s If You’re Not The One. After that he went on to release his first single That’s My Goal. Since his crowning moment, in less than three months, Shayne Ward has achieved unprecedented success. He entered the Guinness World Record book for the most downloaded track in one day, claimed the Christmas No.1, selling over a million records, received a Brit Award nomination, headlined the X Factor UK tour playing to over 180,000 people and completed his debut album. The nation voted for him in their millions – now Shayne Ward, whose clean cut looks are considered dreamy by young girls and mums alike, attempts to prove his worth as a bona fide singer. Produced by some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Steve Mac, Jorgen Elofsson, Quiz/Larossi, Per & David and Cutfather & Joe, this 13-track record is certainly polished.

The album is mainly downbeat piano-led, string-infused love songs

Featuring his record-breaking single That's My Goal, and second release No Promises, Shayne's velvety vocals are the indisputable star of this album. Other stand out tracks include a remake of the KCi and JoJo hit All My Life, a Latin inspired sexy ballad I Cry, the up tempo groove Next To Me and a classic in the making Stand By Me. Shayne's X Factor final performance of Over The Rainbow, which won the hearts of the nation during the final, is also featured as a live bonus track by huge popular demand. The album is mainly downbeat piano-led, string-infused love songs. The lyrical gist is 'nothing is impossible' (literally on the Unchained Melody-like Stand By Me) and overcoming adversity, with a nod to the voters who got Shayne his break (Bon Jovi-esque ballad What About Me). There's no 'change a word, take a third' co-writing going on; Shayne just does his job and sings extremely well. Acquitting himself on every track he hits all the high notes, has largely overcome his odd phrasing on the X Factor and sounds as accomplished as any shiny new US import.

The eponymous debut showcases Mr. Ward's talent to it's full potential

Shayne Ward was born into a large family. He has 6 siblings including his twin sister Emma. Shayne's three big passions in life are singing, dancing and football. Before becoming a contestant on the X Factor, he performed in the band Destiny. As a teenager he also finished among the top 30 contestants in Popstars: The Rivals, a competition to form a boy band. Louis Walsh was Shayne Ward's mentor during the contest. His final challenger was 41-year-old former garbageman Andy Abraham. Shayne Ward won the final vote by just over 1% of over 10 million votes cast. As superstar status beckons and with his long-term future assured, Shayne mania is sweeping the nation, and it's contagious. The eponymous debut showcases Mr. Ward's talent to it's full potential with some great pop tracks in all styles. Recorded in Stockholm, Copenhagen and London, this is a promising album on which Shayne's doing exactly what he does best – belting out copybook ballads that are easy to sing along to. If current form continues, if he remains humble, and if the tabloids go easy on him, then it's hard to think what could stand in his way. Cowell may finally have found his perfect pop star!
