Back To Mine review

Royksopp are popular not only among fans of electronic music

Back To Mine series albums are regularly released since February 1999. The first performer who took part in this project was a well-known British DJ Nick Warren. The project's principle point lies in performing a compilation where an artist plays a material different from what he usually puts on his official albums, it is based on what he would play for himself at home, outside a nightclub session. Mostly, Dance Music Collective releases three or four Back To Mine albums a year; during the existence of this project such influential figures in electronic music as Morcheeba, Tricky, Carl Cox, Liam (The Prodigy), Adam Freeland and many, many others took part in it. The first Back To Mine compilation of 2007 became a 25th disc in this famous series. This time out a long list of celebrities was enlarged by Norwegian duet Royksopp, and this looks quite natural by the way. This duet popularity brought them not only electronica fans' respect but also major media corporations' interest. For example, their single Epple is used as a welcome music in Mac OS X operating system, it plays when a user boots a new Mac for the first time. It was also used as background music during DJ talk on Virgin Radio and even BBC used it in some of its shows. In a word, Royksopp should try hard to disappoint their fans with a new record even if it is a side project.

Back To Mine is based on song of different artists

Just like it was expected Back To Mine consists of upbeat, lively dance cover versions of widely various artists. The stylistics of tracks chosen by Royksopp keeps to funk and electronic music of 80's representing a peculiar catalogue of those artists who has influenced Royksopp music. The list of performers varies from such celebrities as Talking Heads and Mike Oldfield to less popular Supermax. Each track is unique in its own way; sometimes beats and samples used by Royksopp offer quite unexpected twists of mood within a certain song. However, Royksopp try to stick to reasonable limits keeping the flavor of 80's disco and sunshine of pure funk. As for the most felicitous songs, among the leaders there are definitely such tracks as Legs (Art Of Noise) and Sphinx (Harry Thamann) with its hypnotic voice. Dirty Talk (Klein and MBO) is really great too, it can be called a modern interpretation of 8 bit games melodies.

DMC label promises to release three more Back To Mine albums in 2007

Besides cover versions, there is a track for those who want to hear something new from Royksopp personally. Hiding under the alias Emanuele Spice, the musicians recorded their original track Meatball. But don't expect this track to be classical Royksopp, it is made in the vein of the entire album; it sounds quite suitable in the context of other tracks. Overall the album turned out to be lively and fun. Electro pop with electronic elements is the best term that can describe it. And here lies the very essence of back to mine. This is a project that lets you look into the artist's soul, behold his musical roots. This will be interesting for everyone who cares about the internal side of Royksopp and wants to understand the basis of modern electronic music directions. It is a pretty interesting and exciting process. Beside Royksopp's album DMC label plans to release compilations from Bugz In The Attic, The Guillemots и Hard-Fi, so 2007 promises to be much more fruitful than 2006, in which only two albums were issued.
