Owl City
Biography
Owl City is utterly and completely the project of Adam Young, American multiinstrumentalist. Adam is well known to music lovers thanks to his other projects, such as Sky Sailing and Port Blue, however currently the artist is busy working with Owl City. Owl City’s history in particular and Adam Young’s musical career in general began… at night, in the basement of his parents’ house. Suffering from insomnia, Young decided to engage in music really seriously. New tracks kept appearing and then the twenty-first century itself gave Adam a clue what to do with them. The ever-present Internet became Adam’s next step: MySpace welcomed a new user, providing him a huge number of potential listeners.
Adam’s songs on his page on MySpace proved to be a true sensation. They were listened an outstanding number of times, thereby such kind of success let Young make a confident start and at the same time gave him a great opportunity to sign a contract with a major record company in the nearest future. Thus, the musician’s very first release of an EP titled Of June took place in 2007. His start turned out to be strong and rather confident indeed: Of June immediately peaked at the top of dance and electronic albums chart of Billboard. A year later Adam prepared the full-length long play Maybe I'm Dreaming (2008), which pleased fans with numerous hits, including Super Honeymoon, Air Traffic and others. Synthpop, or emopop, as it had been described by the artist himself, proved to be extremely interesting to the listeners. Poetical texts and bright, juicy arrangements simply could not be ignored by connoisseurs of emotional and sincere music.
The artist’s discography was enlarged by a very strong record Ocean Eyes in 2009. That long play got mixed reviews from experts; however Owl City’s fans had another point of view. Well, Ocean Eyes’ platinum status in the US proved that perfectly, didn’t it? Actually, Ocean Eyes became another evidence that listeners enjoyed Adam Young’s style a lot. The artist, inspired by the creativity of performers of “new wave”, electronic music and even soundtracks of old-school video games, managed to create a unique sound that can be hardly mixed up with someone else’s. Nice and well-memorable melodies alongside with powerful and soft sound became the musician’s signature and recognizable feature. Two years after the release of Ocean Eyes, the long-awaited All Things Bright And Beautiful (2011) finally saw the light. The record became a logical development of Adam’s previous works and it demonstrated to everyone that the artist is in constant search of something new. Thus, the composition Alligator Sky that had been recorded jointly with Shawn Chrystopher will probably surprise many listeners in a good way. Three amazing albums of Owl City already saw the light, and All Things Bright And Beautiful promises us not less interesting additions to Adam’s discography in the future.
