The MF Life review

New Canadian star Melanie Fiona

Melanie Fiona found herself in the spotlight of many listeners, who prefer such genres as rhythm and blues, soul and reggae. That Canadian artist has already released the album titled The Bridge back in 2009, and her debut creation produced a great effect on critics, while music lovers enjoyed an incredible cocktail of soul and pop-music. Many people noticed that Melanie’s very first studio work let us all understand that the singer knows perfectly, which genres she adores and what kind of music she would like to perform. Actually, no wonder that Fiona knows what she wants – she began writing songs at the age of sixteen, so when the artist started recording her debut album, she had quite an experience in the field of creating songs. After having a short break from the studio work, Melanie began preparing the fresh material for her upcoming album. The singer made a very competent step: she intrigued the audience, making listeners wonder and trying to guess what her new album would be like. Thereby Fiona issued two very strong singles, and Gone and Never Coming Back, the first of them, got to the TOP40 of American rhythm and blues chart, and 4AM managed to peak even higher, on the eight place. All in all it was a solid beginning for the new record, and the intrigue is still here: what is the conception of the fresh album and what kinds of innovations are expected?

Modern sound of The MF Life

So, what is a modern rhythm and blues and how distant is it from its ancestor? Well, every single artist treats genres in his or hers own unique way, and right now it is Melanie’s turn to present her point of view on that musical direction’s evolution. The album’s first composition called This Time, recorded alongside with J. Cole, will draw a curtain of a mystery a little bit. Listeners will get a huge volume of bass and quite a mid-tempo beat, which fits recitatives just perfectly and at the same time it feels right for the traditional singing. This track is followed by the familiar for the music lovers lyrical and atmospheric song 4 AM. Also the connoisseurs of lyrics should pay their attention to the composition Wrong Side Of A Love Song, which sound will remind strongly on good old rhythm and blues with minimum of digital effects and with the maximum of live instruments. Another collaboration on The MF Life was created with rapper Nas – the composition Running absorbed the energy of hip-hop, and Fiona’s vocals sound even brighter against the background of recitatives. One more excellent example of contemporary rhythm and blues sound is a song L.O.V.E. John Legend took part in the creative process of this one, and it seems that this hit’s recipe is quite simple – melodies to remember and sincere, pure energy.

Album for romantics

So, Melanie Fiona finally released her second album, which was so expected by many people, and of course, listeners expected it to be not less fascinating than the artist’s debut long play. Now it is possible to say that the fans’ expectations have been completely satisfied. Fiona presented the mixture of several genres, and such a rotation of musical directions proved to be her signature feature. It must be stated that all these genres sound harmonically altogether and more than that – they make the long play’s composition richer. At the same time many songs are incredibly distant from each other, for example Gone And Never Coming Back and Can't Say I Never Loved You. These songs are absolutely different, but within the borders of The MF Life they cotton together just fine. Long story short, the studio attempt proved to be successful, but those listeners who will get the Deluxe version of The MF Life will be especially pleased, as soon as they will get four bonus tracks. Among them the mid-tempo Rock Paper Scissors, amazing composition Like I Love You with the amazing down beat and other, not less notable songs. Spring is the perfect time for something new and intriguing, and Melanie Fiona’s fresh studio work has got all the chances to become an ideal soundtrack for exciting spring changes.
