Letters (Deluxe Edition) review

Matt Cardle conquered The X Factor

Television gives a truly huge number of possibilities for talented people. Especially that concerns various talent shows, and the British The X Factor is definitely one of the most famous. Thus, Matt Cardle took part in the seventh season of that TV show. By that time the artist had quite an experience in performing: he had been a member of the bands Darwyn and Seven Summers. Cardle decided to try his luck in solo career, and everything proved to be successful: the victory at The X Factor brought him not only the priceless acknowledgment from music lovers, but also an incredibly important contract with sound recording company. Soon after that Matt released the very first single called When We Collide, which made a real furor: the top lines in different charts demonstrated the highest interest of listeners in Cardle’s creativity. Acoustic guitar and heartfelt voice of the musician played their role, so When We Collide has been heading the charts for several weeks. It goes without saying that Matt’s full-length studio attempt just could not be ignored. Letters saw the light in autumn of 2011 and it took a notable place among others romantic albums.

Letters: a lot of stories

Every composition of the album presents to listeners a certain story, whether it is reflection about immateriality of everything around us, or a short story about looking for a loved person. In brief, it means that you should definitely pay attention to the lyrics, as soon as Cardle tried his best to make it as good as the music. Starlight, the opening track of the album, creates the right mood for the whole record: even in spite of some sadness, compositions somehow remain bright and optimistic. Acoustic guitar creates a solid basis for almost all the songs, while elaborated arrangements just make accents on the melody. Run For Your Life proudly presents an extremely catchy chorus, and the verses of that songs got an interesting part of drums. The title song of the album, Letters, starts in a calm way, but gradually it gains the tempo. There is no doubt that this composition got elements of rock – loud guitars and rock beats are distant from pop-music indeed. Arrangements will not give a single reason for boredom, because they are done in the highest level and it feels that fantasy was an important part of the creative process. Songs do not copy each other, that is why the whole long play goes in literally one breath. Also Letters included the familiar for listeners hit When We Collide.

Amazing debut

Matt Cardle deserved his success, that is for sure. The musician has been working hard, and the top lines of charts are the logical and well-formed result. His performances at the talent show have always been bright and rememberable, and Matt established a reputation of a talented and emotional artist. Sure, the studio work is totally different from the playing in front of an audience, but Cardle managed to preserve and transmit his feelings on studio records as well. The arrangements are done in an amazing way: they do not cover the singer’s voice, so the main part of expressiveness is taken by Matt’s vocals. Acoustic versions of songs, which were included to the Deluxe version of the album are especially interesting. Thus, Amazing, For You, Walking On Water and others got a brand new sound. In general Letters can be hardly called a record that brought a lot of innovation techniques, but still, this album deserves attention. Matt Cardle makes his first steps in the solo career, and he has all the way to go. His long play Letters let us all know that the musician will present us many hits in the future.
