Hold On Now, Youngster... review

Merry melodies and music full of energy from Los Campesinos!

Prepare yourselves to hear the music of the new millennium! Seven boys and girls have created it joining in a team called Los Campesinos! Welsh band from Cardiff was formed only two years ago, but crowds of viewers gather on their live concerts already and many believe that it is this splendid seven that has finally said a new word in indie pop music. Literate bookish lyrics and the performers' pleasant Welsh accent, a great combination of male and female vocals and a faultless instrumental background are only a part of all the pluses of the young and bold band's debut album. Hold On Now Youngster is sure to become one of the most wanted and most listened to record of the new generation for it offers a way to see the today's state of things in a new light and at the same time never gets too broody or pessimistic. On the contrary, the merry melodies and music full of energy will have an effect of alarm clock for many causing one to act and make new starts.

Not a single minute of rest on Hold On Now Youngster

An absolute hurricane of a record Hold On Now Youngster full of simple tunes and songs on which the main role is given to topical lyrics and a wonderful performance full of emotions is listened to at a breath and does not let to have a single minute of rest. The album opens with incendiary song Death To Los Campesinos pleasing with a joyful rhythm and shrill but never irritating guitars, and composition Broken Heartbeats Sound Like Breakbeats is able to excite anybody with its danceable mood provided by both drums and harmonious vocal parties. Drop It Doe Eyes amazes with the power of emotions in the musicians' playing and the vocalists' singing, while a somewhat slower song My Year In Lists is based on the contrasting sounding of men's and women's vocals, and reflective track Knee Deep At ATP with a changing rhythm catches its mood. No doubt the most unusual creation on the album is This Is How You Spell "HAHAHA We Destroyed The Hopes And Dreams Of A Generation Of Faux Romantics", its name only is something. Young men here express their disclosing views on the contemporary world and again please with a flawless performance. A pretentious composition We Are All Accelerated Readers cannot be compared to an utterly easy-going You Me Dancing, and the album's most complicated tune is on Sweet Dreams Sweet Cheeks again amazing with its lyrics. The record closes with 2007, The Year Punk Broke My Heart, a song starting with silence and then offering a nice rock melody without words letting us know that the guys have already told us everything they wanted to so far.

A breathtaking success beginning

The main peculiarity of Los Campesinos!'s work is a distinct difference between its components. In the first place it is its form. Unrestrainedly loud keyboards, guitars that have set themselves free, glockenspiels, insane drums and vocalists capable to out voice all that will conquer you from the very first listening to Hold On Now Youngster. In the second place it is its content. These are the lyrics we have not heard for a long time. The verses of these young poets surprise with the novelty of ideas, with unexpectedly witty rhymes and simply with grammatical correctness. Certainly the collective has set the evaluating standard high enough for it but taking into account its eternal energy charge and the support of a fan base that is constantly growing Los Campesinos! will surely cope with the task set before it and Hold On Now Youngster will have a continuation. To all appearances we have become the witnesses of a breathtaking success beginning and if the glory does not lead the guys a different way in the nearest future we can well expect a new present from them which is sure to prove not less vivid and sensational than Hold On Now Youngster.
