Hands review

The ambitious girl claims the laurels of a pop star

British performer Victoria Hesketh, more known as Little Boots, was born in a tourist resort Blackpool, but she grew up in Thornton, Lancashire. She became the only daughter in the family and the eldest child, too – the artist has three younger brothers. After the school, Little Boots graduated from the University Of Leeds – her dissertation work was dedicated to jazz, which the artist was interested in. The singer made her way into the musical scene simultaneously with studying. At the age of sixteen she tried herself in a talent show Pop Idol, but did not succeed in all the selective rounds. After it Little Boots formed a jazz trio and toured with it around Europe. However, it was only one attempt of the active girl in her long chain of tries – subsequently, she gathered a project titled Disco Dead. In early 2009, Little Boots’ music was highly praised by the BBC’s Sound Of 2009. The attention of the public immediately gave the artist an active role in different shows, festivals and concerts. At that moment, Little Boots was preparing her first album Hands to be released. She openly stated that she wanted to be a pop star for a long time, reach a level of popularity as high as possible and gain the love of the public. Well, a record like Hands is sure to let her make the first firm steps on the road to her goal.

The winding electro pop by Little Boots

The entire disc Hands is filled with the atmosphere of party and celebration. It starts with the lead-single New In Town, a colorful story about unusual people of Los Angeles, whom the artist met while she was there to record Hands. The electro pop track Stuck On Repeat was recorded with Little Boots in cooperation with Joe Goddard from Hot Chip. The artist wrote this tune under the influence of the disco music of the 1980’s and 1990’s, having the personality and songs of Australian singer Kylie Minogue in mind. The danceable pop melody Click has a wonderfully memorable chorus, as the following short, but bright song Meddle, the latter has an infectious beat. The stylish pop composition Remedy reminding of the 1990’s has the impressing synthesizers and the potential to become a dance floor hit. Tracks Ghosts and Mathematics have become the disc decorations haunting with a celebratory atmosphere. It is natural that as all the other performers, Little Boots has her own favorite artists – they include the band Human League. So you can imagine the happiness of the singer when Phil Oakey of this band agreed to duet with her on a brilliant song Symmetry. This electro pop composition has become a real pearl of the dance floor collection called Hands. The work comes to its finale with such praiseworthy tracks as romantic Hearts Collide and energetic No Brakes.

Hands will become a universal gift for anyone

After listening to the disc Hands, you are sure to get a great charge of jolliness and celebratory mood. Little Boots wants to make people have fun, and she successfully hits the target with this wonderful work. The album Hands combines the characteristic of indie music’s freedom from commercial records drawbacks and the high quality of the sound, which is so estimated on the big label releases. Well, it should not be a surprise for you, as Hands was produced by the aforementioned Joe Goddard and Greg Kurstin, the latter known for his work with Lily Allen. Somebody can compare this long-play to the creativity of Girls Aloud or Kylie Minogue, somebody can make the same operation with the already mentioned Allen, but it should be acknowledged at once that the debut by Little Boots is no way a copycatting these artists’ full-length records. Moreover, it is highly original and filled with individuality. Both this statement and the fact that Hands is a monolith and qualitatively fulfilled track collection do unite it with the works of the artists enumerated above, but it does not make it similar to them. Pay your notice also to the fact that Little Boots has recorded a sunny and cheerful album, ideally fitting for a wide range auditory – you can listen to it at a party, having rest with the family and on your way to work. The record Hands will be a mere surprise for those who are disappointed in the contemporary pop music and have decided that all the new artists are alike – Little Boots will make you change your mind.
