Rebirth review

Rock and rapping together on one disc

Musician, actor and sports admirer Lil Wayne lives a bright and eventful life. His tour buses are successfully searched for the matter of drugs, he proclaims himself to be the best rapper of all living and finally decided to make a drastic change in his activity and after six successful rap discs records a rock album. Well, the rock sound did not exclude the artist’s favorite rapping from the album. Due to the hard labor in the recording studio, Lil Wayne was constantly postponing the date of the official release. He created over thirty songs for the album and cherry-picked the best of them. Finally, the disc with the symbolic title Rebirth was planned to be released on February 1, 2010. After that, Wayne was going to be jailed on the accusation in illegal gun possessing. However, the life of the young rapper gave a hook again – or, it will be better to say, a leak. The promo copies of his long-play leaked to the Internet in December 2009 because of a mistake on Amazon.com. Thus, the listeners can enjoy the mixture of rock and rap on the Rebirth album right now. As for Wayne himself, he is filled with fresh ideas. Waiting for the court sentence, he works over the continuation of his Tha Carter saga – it will become the forth disc in this series.

Rebirth: experiment and faithfulness to the roots

Lil Wayne is sure to try himself in the rock image due to some weighty reasons – at least, because master of eclectics Kanye West could give him this idea with the rock-meets-rap approach in his songs. Well, the artist does not reject the influence of the great mixer on his creativity. The disc opens with two consecutive duets with Shanell – the reluctant blues track American Star (Feat. Shanell) and the popular single Prom Queen (Feat. Shanell), which is decorated not only with the brilliant lyrics, but also with the heavy rock guitars. Together with the charming singer, Lil also recorded such compositions as Runnin' (Feat. Shanell) and touching So Over You (Feat. Shanell). The song Da Da Da will definitely amuse the listeners with the hip-hop vibe and the unusual sound effects that Wayne used to transform his vocals. The collaboration Drop The World (Feat. Eminem) became one more solid and powerful decoration of the disc. The song combines hip-hop with rock and in the result gives us the product of amazing quality. Wayne’s duets with Kevin Rudolf and Nicki Minaj were no less effective than the other collaborations – they are correspondingly One Way Trip (Feat. Kevin Rudolf) and Knockout (Feat. Nicki Minaj). It should be stated that the artist’s works with the guest stars are undoubted hits on the disc, but he has several solo spotlights also. For example, the final composition Most Wanted Rockstar is a vigorous and hot finish of the long-play.

Lil Wayne turns everything to gold

We can easily compare Lil Wayne to the myth tsar Midas, who turned in gold everything he touched. Thus, Wayne fulfills everything he planned brilliantly. The release of Rebirth proves once again that a talented person is talented in everything. Well, somebody can say that this rock disc mimics 808’s And Heartbreak by Kanye West, but it will be an ill statement. West brought rock on his disc, but preserved the hip-hop esthetics and vibe, while Lil Wayne made vice versa – he recorded an entirely rock album with the elements of his adored hip-hop. The artist played himself some bass and guitar parties for the compositions and collaborated with several star rockers in order to make the sound of Rebirth genuine. Well, if Rebirth was not a daring experiment, Wayne could popularize rock music among the Afro-American population. As for the current moment, the artist prepares his forth-coming hip-hop western continuation Tha Carter IV. The musician’s fans will be undoubtedly outrageous of happiness, when the disc sees light. Nevertheless, we would like to see some more brave attempts like Rebirth with all its drive and energy from a rap star, about which even Obama made several statements.
