A Creature I Don't Know review

Laura Marling and magic of music

Laura appeared on the music stage quite recently, however she managed to get into the spotlight in practically no time. The performer and author of the songs, who has not separated with her guitar since the very childhood, conquered the listeners’ hearts very quickly. If you think that melodiousness in music is the main thing, then you just have to get acquainted with Laura Marling’s creativity. Who knows where she gets her inspiration, but none of her songs can be imagined without bright and rememberable melody. Chosen by Laura folk genre implies delicacy by itself, but Marling definitely took it to the next level. Nevertheless it is difficult to describe it, just like everything that is connected with creativity in general. That must be heard, that is it. It must be mentioned that Laura’s two first albums had been nominated for Mercury Prize, which is a great achievement. Marling won her well-deserved Best Female Solo Artist at Brit Awards in 2011. Well, of course the statistics cannot present emotions of the singer that she puts into her songs. But the artist’s new studio attempt A Creature I Don't Know has all these emotions.

A Creature I Don't Know – the renewed folk

The release of a long awaited record finally took place, so now all those who wish have an excellent opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of folk. The album’s opening act is a composition The Muse, which demonstrates both Laura’s performing skills and fancy arrangement. Not a big number of instruments was a perfect thing indeed. Thereby the song sounds powerful, but not overloaded. The following track called I Was Just A Card turned out to be not less atmospheric, but a bit sadder. By the way, Marling’s lyrics deserve special attention, as soon as she got her reputation of a poetry master for a good reason, after all. And still the singer remained faithful to her style, in spite of all the changes. Thereby, the main part in the songs still belongs to the guitar. That is the very instrument, which creates the fairy tale atmosphere that cannot be imagined without Laura’s vocals. However the really hard work had been done on the arrangements. Everything is done properly, so there are simply no useless extra details. For example, the song Salinas sounds powerful, but all the instruments exist in a harmony – this is folk after all, even if it is a little renewed.

Welcome to the fairy tale

Ten compositions of A Creature I Don't Know remind of fairy tales. Short in comparison with fairy tales, but not so short in comparison with songs. Ten tracks with the total length of forty minutes take the listener to a place quite far from the day vanity. Some songs from the long play make a listener calm, some do the opposite thing. The bright example of such a contrast is the energetic The Beast and mid-tempo Rest In The Bed. Well, Laura marling keeps on mastering her skills and she moves forward. Just compare her debut studio work Alas I Cannot Swim and her new creation. The artist did not change her style, she just goes to the next level. She becomes more confident and enjoys the process of searching for the new sound. And Marling succeeds, to the great pleasure of her fans and folk lovers. Laura’s records are being released quite often, so probably listeners will not have to wait for her following work for a long time. And there will be people, who would wait – the fairy tale songs of a young singer are enjoyed by connoisseurs of music indeed.
