KT Tunstall
Biography
Kate KT Tunstall was born in Scottish capital on June 23, 1975. Her biological mother, half Chinese, having given the birth to the child from an Irishman, refused from the daughter. The girl was immediately adopted by a family of pedagogues. KT grew up with two brothers and got a good education, taking an active part in exchange students' programmes. In her twenties KT decided to become a rock star and started singing in different indie groups. She did not get into the limelight though one of the bands she played in, Red Light Stylus, was praized by critics. KT made up her mind to look for other ways and started a solo career. The singer started writing music and lyrics herself. She became famous for her live performances with the full band, playing the guitar with high masterity and affection.
In 2004 the artist recorded her debut work Eye To The Telescope. Due to Tunstall's being unknown to the wide audience this wonderful work climbed on only 73 mark in British Album Chart. But a lucky accident changed all instantly. She was asked to make an appearence on Later with Jools Holland as the planned signer refused from the part in the show in the very last moment. Within 24 hours Tunstall prepared her lead single from Eye To The Telescope, the beautiful ballad Black Horse And The Cherry Tree, and made an extremely good performance. Next day she woke up being famous all over the UK. KT's debut creation was immediately re-released and this time peaked at number 3 in the chart. By chance she also won the attention of the US listeners. A participant of the American Idol, Katherine McPhee, asked Tunstall's permission to sing Black Horse And The Cherry Tree. KT gave her this permission and became well-known and cherished in the USA. The artist sometimes says ironically that it is McPhee, whom she should thank for making her famous in this country.
Tunstall started active duet work with such celebrities as Missy Elliott and Radiohead to name a couple. In 2006 she recorded her wonderful acoustic work KT Tunstall's Acoustic Extravaganza, on which the artist proved to be a virtuoso guitar-player. The same time she took part in different shows, concerts and went on a support tour for her debut work. KT also got famous for her environmental work. She supported various actions devoted to a problem of global warming, and deforestation. KT even had a meeting with Tony Blair on these questions. A part of her CD sales goes for tree-planting. Thanks to KT her native Scotland has already got about 50,000 young trees. In September 2007 Tunstall made another bright appearance in the musical industry with her second album Drastic Fantastic. The energetic lead single, Hold On, appeared to be a powerful return to folk roots of the singer. Though having several remembable upbeat rock compositions, Drastic Fantastic can also boast of fantastically good lyrical ballads. Release of the artist’s third long play entitled Tiger Suit took place in 2010. Created in KT’s easy recognizable manner, Tiger Suit was enjoyed by listeners and it got excellent reviews from the experts. Moreover, critics also agreed that this record proved to be on of the singer’s best works – Tunstall managed to mix various styles in a very delicate way and as the result she got truly original musical cocktail.
