Studio Album by Katie Melua released in 2007Pictures review
Beautiful singer of Georgian origin
Ketevan Melua, more known as Katie Melua, is a young British singer-songwriter and musician of Georgian origin, known for her sweet strong voice and excentric behaviour. She started her career with the brilliant album Call Off The Search in 2003. The disc made her a superstar of European musical charts the same year. Actually, Katie got the British citizenship and thus became a truely European singer only in August 2005, a month before her second work Piece By Piece saw light and consequently became four times platinum. The success was so big that the girl even had to quit her three-year-long and rather serious relations with the boyfriend Luke Pritchard, lead singer of The Kooks, for whom it proved to be problematic to date with the more famous girlfriend. Though Katie did not fall into depression because of this. She devoted herself to work and this year under the delicate management of her producer Mike Batt released her third wonderful album, Pictures.
Pictures: a handful of picturesque ballads
This album shows that Katie definetely grew up as the author and the singer. Her vocals became more mature and rich, while Mike Batt gives her more initiative with every release: this time Katie co-wrote or wrote 5 songs on the work. Step by step she becomes a singer with original and easily recognizable style - though it is very difficult to be special in the flood of alike glamour pop-singers. On Pictures Katie again amused the listeners by a cover, this time it is In My Secret Life penned by Leonard Cohen. The first single If You Were A Sailboat gives the pace to all the work, a collection of ballads, full of gracious and deliberate romantics. If The Lights Go Out charges with sparkling optimism, while Scary Films is luxurious due to the rich vocals, pleasant melody (characteristic of Batt) and humorous lyrics, enumerating all classical plots and monsters of scary movies. Among songs, written by Melua herself, Spellbound and What I Miss About You are for sure the best enjoyable works.
Excentric personality
On Pictures Katie sounds extremely good and self-assured. There is nothing surprising in it: the young artist really grew up and became more active, researching the edges of her talent. Without stopping touring she played a minor character in the big trailer film Grindhouse, entered the Guinness Book and continued trying new extreme kinds of sport. Journalists often call her an "adrenaline junkie" because of this passion. Listening to Katie's albums it is hard to imagine this cute and delicate girl, so tenderly singing her ballads, skydiving of her own free will. She is also different from the other celebrities in her image: in spite of the big critical and commercial success of Katie's two previous albums, she prefers buying clothes in second hands or charity shops. Her personality is as rich and diverse as her voice, and it is clearly seen on Pictures, featuring 12 wonderuful and fascinating ballads-schetches of today's life by the eyes of this extraordinary artist.
