Pala review

Friendly Fires are friendly enough

The band Friendly Fires is very young (it was formed in 2006), however it is promising indeed. In 2007 they were already invited to the famous show Transmission and of course young men did not miss a chance to perform. By the way, Friendly Fires became the first band, which was invited to Transmission and which did not have a contract with a label at that time. For fairness’ sake it must be mentioned that after this broadcast Friendly Fires had no problems with sound recording companies: the musicians managed to make a name in an incredibly confident way, so the contract and great opportunities for self-fulfillment were just a matter of time. Thus, the rockers preferred to work with XL Recordings, and in 2008 they released their debut self-titled album. By 2011 Friendly Fires prepared absolutely new material. Cheer, fans of original and distinctive music!

Eleven puzzles of Pala

Well, here is the new creation of the British musicians. Eleven compositions that differ from each other so much. However they easily combine the unified whole, just as element of puzzles. Interesting rhythms, elaborated arrangements – everything proves that Friendly Fires did an amazing job to get the exact sound that they had been looking for. Curiously enough but first tracks Live Those Days Tonight and Blue Cassette demonstrate us a transition towards indie-rock. Lovers of dance-punk should not get out of tune though: Friendly Fires’ creativity still has elements of dance rock, so dance floors will hardly become quiet and slow places. Make sure to check out the song Hurting – it is a hundred percent disco-hit. Some time ago Friendly Fires stated that they found inspiration in the art of numerous musicians, including techno DJ Carl Craig, rhythm and blues legend Prince and others. The rockers tried to realize all their predilections on Pala and the result exceeded all expectations: unexpected combinations of styles were really enjoyed by fans. That is proved by the fact that the long play peaked at top ten of Great Britain albums chart.

New stage of Friendly Fires

It is always interesting to observe new bands. The first stages of their creativity are especially intriguing, as soon as a bright debut is not always a pledge of a future success. However Friendly Fires are doing just fine. Back in 2006 they started in a confident way and proved to the whole world that dance-punk and indie-rock present amazing opportunities. Friendly Fires’ debut studio attempt was closer to dance-punk, but the musicians decided to shift the direction to indie-rock on their second long play. Album Pala turned out to be very atmospheric and serious-minded, while it also contains a number of interesting dance-oriented compositions. Eleven songs is probably not such a great number. However none of them can be called short ones, so the total length of the album is almost forty five minutes. There is absolutely no doubt that it will be enough to evaluate the great job that had been done by Friendly Fires. The record Pala is interesting and – which is extremely important – intriguing. We are looking forward to the band’s following studio attempt!
