Playing In The Shadows review

Diversified performer

That musician can be proud of his universalism. Yes, Example can be hardly called an orchestra-man, but his main catch is in something else. He writes lyrics, combining vocals and recitatives in his songs. The tracks by themselves also deserve special attention, as soon as they include several genres at once, from electronica to hip-hop. Initially Example was inclined to hip-hop. He began rapping and trying his strength while he was a teenager, so his experience in rhyming thoughts is quite impressive. Step by step, his creativity absorbed the bigger amount of electronica elements; however it did not scare the listeners. All those genres, mixed up in a fancy way, pleased the music lovers, and the crossover turned out to be a signature feature of the artist. Recently dubstep started to gain popularity all around the world. Example enjoyed the elaborated cobwebs of low frequencies and decided to try them in his own compositions. Sure thing that he did not forget about the hip-hop and electronica in all its forms. Well, the release of Playing in the Shadows finally took place, and now every music lover has an opportunity to get acquainted with the freshest musical cocktail from Example.

Games with genres, or Playing In The Shadows

The long play is opened by the composition Skies Don't Lie that is the best presentation of that very crossover, which attracted listeners’ attention and got to the spotlight. Powerful electronica, transferring into the low frequency vortexes and flavored by recitatives – that sounds quite original indeed. The following track Stay Awake will also please the lovers of dubstep, but the influence of electronica in that song is the way bigger. Hip-hop is presented in a less volume too, but nevertheless the crossings between compositions can be hardly felt. Thereby the dance song Changed The Way You Kiss Me does not associate with Example’s predilections to hip-hop, but at the same time it cannot be called foreign in the long play. The eponymous composition Playing In The Shadows proved to be one of the most atmospheric tracks: guitar bridge and mid-tempo are changed by the dubstep. Quite unexpected moves turned out to be really successful ones. A very nice addition to the album waits for the listeners after the twelfth song. Acoustic bonus track Lying To Yourself became the ideal final chord.

Example reached the new level

Well, Example’s new creation differs from his previous works. The musician keeps on moving forward, he never stops looking for new edges of sound. All things he had planned finally worked out, that is why the new sound and techniques of performance appeared. Playing In The Shadows became a sort of a new stage for Example, because he managed to save his style, but at the same time he added some new elements to it. Thus, his recitatives sound harmonically with electronic music, while vocals go perfectly with dubstep. Actually, Example had established a reputation of an extremely talented and distinctive artist a long time ago. He enjoys experimenting with the sound in general, and his intuition had never let him down. Playing In The Shadows is another proof that Example is able to create something big. Now we can just wait for his following studio work and try to guess what surprises the artist will prepare for his fans.
