Biography

The British duo Eurythmics was formed in 1980 by the Scottish singer Annie Lennox and the English musician David Stewart. They met in the middle of seventies and before the creation of Eurythmics they had worked in several groups. Annie and David wanted to get the absolute freedom for creativity and to compose music without any limits. Moreover, they understood that they were comfortable with each other and their relationship was wonderful. Thus, Lennox and Stewart became the band’s only permanent members, inviting other musicians at different periods of creativity to implement new ideas.

The duo’s debut album titled In The Garden was released in 1981. Eurythmics’ first work included elements of psychedelic and electronic, but the listeners and critics needed some time to feel all the aspects of that record. The following album Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (1983) made the things much clearer: experts acclaimed that LP and the high level of sales on both sides of the Atlantic proved the music lovers’ interest in the British duo. Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) turned out to be the band’s first album that had been certified Platinum in Great Britain. It was followed by the record Touch (1983) which managed to repeat its predecessor’s success. In 2003 Touch was included into Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The fourth studio work titled Be Yourself Tonight was issued in 1985. Eurythmics changed their sound and it became more rock-oriented, however they saved the atmosphere, which was so much enjoyed by the band’s fans. It is worth mentioning that the experiment proved to be successful: the music lovers were pleased by the new sound, and soon Be Yourself Tonight was certified Double Platinum. A year later Eurythmics discography was enlarged by the record Revenge (1986), which was as interesting and strong as the duo’s previous work. The group’s fans did not have to wait for the next album for a long time: the seventh LP Savage was released in 1987. Savage was critically acclaimed and soon it was certified Gold. The album We Too Are One (1989) became the duo’s last studio work for ten years. In fact, the group was disbanded, in spite of the fact that no official statements were made.

In 1999 Eurythmics reunited and released the long-awaited record Peace, which was enjoyed both be the musicians’ old fans and by those who began the acquaintance with Eurythmics from that LP. Since that the duo did not release the new album, but in 2005 the extremely strong compilation album Ultimate Collection appeared. It included Eurythmics best songs, and also the group created two brand new compositions especially for Ultimate Collection.
