Keep You Close review

Musical kaleidoscope from dEUS

The rockers dEUS started their activity at the very beginning of nineties of the previous century. Initially they concentrated on performing cover versions of other musicians’ compositions, however pretty soon dEUS decided that it would be really interesting to try their own strength and luck in the sphere of song writing. Thereby the group began creating its own material. It is worth mentioning that the musicians had absolutely different tastes and preferences. They enjoyed various genres, from folk to progressive rock, and of course such kind of diversity found its place in the band’s creativity. Kaleidoscope of moods, major and minor compositions, audacious musical experiments and exotic instruments – all that became the band’s easy recognizable features. Not many bands can be proud of such a broad artistic horizon. It seems that dEUS’ creativity simply does not fit the free-loving indie-rock frames. Some of their compositions remind of real progressive rock, while others are great examples of energetic and merry funk. Obviously, the musicians just could not choose the only direction, and that is definitely a good thing. Listeners enjoyed the cocktail that had been prepared thoroughly by the rockers. By the way, dEUS were the first Belgian indie-rockers (they can be also a part of that genre as well), who signed the contract with international record label. And there were some unquestionable reasons for that.

Keep You Close under the bank lights

dEUS' creativity somehow reminds of the theatrical act – everything is highly poetical and a bit pompous. Every single detail had been worked out carefully, and that approach is a safe choice. Luckily the performers, trying to achieve the technical perfection, did not forget about the most important thing – about the emotions, which can be embodied in the notes. Thus, listeners will start their acquaintance with the long play with the eponymous track Keep You Close. Mid-tempo song plays its role just perfectly and prepares music lovers for the following surprises. That’s the only way it could be – this is dEUS, after all! The Final Blast will please listeners with its interesting rhythm section. Drums and bass create the solid basis of that track, while vocals, guitar and other elements harmonically enrich it. It goes without saying that Twice (We Survive) is one of the album’s most original songs. Again slow tempo, real emotions and beautiful music – that sort of permanence just cannot be unpleasant. However the rockers got some energetic and drive tracks, like Constant Now or Ghost. Well, there will be no time for boredom, that is for sure.

Innovations or faithfulness to traditions

Curiously enough, but dEUS musicians are able to combine things that are extremely distant from each other. They stay faithful to their style and do not adapt for numerous fashionable trends. And do they need it after all? The band already has fans. Moreover, dEUS are not static, they keep on moving, which helps their style to gain new elements. The rockers have a great amount of fresh ideas, which they successfully realize in their compositions, that is why every new album of the band is interesting in its way and it does not copy its predecessor. In that aspect Keep You Close did not turn out to be an exception. That album, recorded in a traditionally high-class level, already got its notable place in the band’s discography. For listeners, who did not have an opportunity to get acquainted with dEUS’ creativity yet, Keep You Close will be an amazing guide for the band’s creativity. Meanwhile, old fans will be able to find out how much Keep You Close is different form the group’s previous works and try to guess, what direction will be chosen by dEUS for the future.
