The Story Goes... review

Craig David has revolutionized the world's perception of urban music. He has sold 13 million records and played sold out concerts around the world. He's also picked up 2 Grammy nominations and multiple other awards. Now five years on from the release of his groundbreaking debut album, he's back to prove his success story is only beginning. His two albums, Born To Do It and Slicker Than Your Average, made Craig the biggest selling R&B act in Europe and the only UK R&B artist to break America, where he counts the likes of P. Diddy, Missy Elliott and Bono amongst his fans. Third album from Craig sees him return to his winning formula by teaming up more heavily with his long-time collaborator Mark Hill. The pair got back to basics and refocused their attention on killer melodies and striking lyrics. The result is a startlingly honest, soulful record where Craig's personality and experiences take center stage. In taking time out from his career, he has rediscovered what moves him, what makes him get on the dance floor and what has shaped the person he is now and all that is translated into a powerfully emotive album, fittingly titled The Story Goes...

With the focus firmly on his smoothly striking vocals, lyrics about love, life and nights out partying are truly a reflection of the last two years of Craig's life and the man behind the hits and headlines. This first single All The Way is a summer monster, it is Craig David's R&B by numbers, a guaranteed hit, strong, catchy, infectious and clever. The Story Goes... moves seamlessly from the lovelorn pleas of My Love Don't Stop and Separate Ways to the gently affecting Johnny, where Craig explores the difficult issue of bullying, slick disco beats of All The Way, the crunky Just Chillin, the high-energy of Hypnotic and the slow and seductive sexuality of Take 'Em Off. The Story Goes... is an honest journey through Craig's life. People that have touched and inspired him, to the ones he has lost with great sadness, such as with the stunning ballad Let Her Go, which is dedicated to his grandmother, who passed away at the end of last year, and the beautiful Don't Love You No More (I'm Sorry) – a mesmerizing tale of lost love and broken hearts, based on Craig's real-life relationship breakdown.

In the space of two albums, Craig David has undergone a remarkable transformation from young upstart to maturity. Yes, this album is commercial; it has plenty of odds on cross over hits. But once again Craig has delivered for the R&B world as well and even the most obvious cross over songs are that strong lyrically that they will sit well on urban remixes. The Story Goes... is every bit as good as his amazing debut.
