British Sea Power

Biography

British indie rock band British Sea Power is often called "group with the most devotion to experiments on the modern scene". During their not very long career musicians have been compared with the large number of bands, ranging from The Cure and Pixies to Joy Division. And the story of British Sea Power is typical for many rock groups. Yan (Scott Wilkinson), Hamilton (Neil Wilkinson) and Wood (Matthew Wood) were school friends, and played together in a number of bands while at school. Then Yan moved to study at Reading University. There he got acquainted with guitarist Noble (Martin Noble). In 2000, Hamilton and Wood also moved to Reading, and they formed a four-man group. They played some gigs, produced a four track demo and was constantly changing it's name. Firstly, Yan and the others called themselves British Air Powers, later Carrion, and British Sea Power was the name of their demo. After considering their actual name, friends moved to Brighton in search of a more vibrant music scene. In this town, the band quickly got a good local acclaim, due mainly to their own club night called "Club Sea Power" (which included 1930s fashion show in addition to music). In the winter of 2009, British Sea Power reported the beginning of their work on the soundtrack to the documentary Man of Aran. The CD with the music and the DVD itself were released at the same time in the spring of the same year.

After one of these nights producer Geoff Travis invited them to record an album on Rough Trade Records. British Sea Power first disk The Decline of British Sea Power was released in June 2003. The album and the first single from it, Carrion, did not archive a stunning success but were popular enough for the band to start touring over UK. The follow-up, Open Season, was released in early April 2005. This disk featured a more accessible, produced sound, and it became more popular than their first release. The single from it, called It Ended On An Oily Stage, became very popular over UK. People also began talking about the signatures of British Sea Power. Firstly, it is their experiments with sound that ranges from the sweeping, often epic, guitar pop music to the visceral melodies. It is also their elaborate and well-thought out live shows – in 2004, British Sea Power won Time Out London Live Band of the Year award. The band usually decorates the scene with foliage and plastic birds (and then members often climb riggings and tear down the foliage), a ten-foot bear, Ursine Ultra, occasionally makes an appearance - often taking a beating from various band members. British Sea Power concerts usually finish with a semi-improvised song called Rock in A, which sometimes lasts for over 20 minutes.

After Open Season, the band released three singles – Remember Me (2003), The Spirit of St. Louis (2004) and Krankenhaus? (2007). The long awaited by fans third album titled Do You Like Rock Music? reached stores only in January 2008. It showed that British Sea Power remain true to themselves. In the winter of 2009, British Sea Power reported the beginning of their work on the soundtrack to the documentary Man of Aran. The CD with the music and the DVD itself were released at the same time in the spring of the same year.
