Go Away White review

Bauhaus' farewell present

This year English Gothic rock band Bauhaus celebrates thirty years since its foundation but no continuation is planned any more. Having first disbanded back in 1983 the four-piece reunited again only in 1998 for a tour that was followed an album Gotham and later in 2005 for another tour and a live performance and has now made up their minds to finish their shared career. During the thirty years vocalist Peter Murphy, guitarist Daniel Ash, drummer Kevin Haskins and bassist David J, considered to be the first gothic rock band have prepared a farewell present for their fans that is a new album called Go Away White. Recorded within eighteen days only the collection has become Bauhaus' fifth full-length studio album and the first since 1983's Burning From the Inside. Despite the 25 years of interval Go Away White sounds like a logic continuation of the unique band's career pleasing with the musicians' splendid playing and gloomy moods that Bauhaus creates so well.

Go Away White, an album of true professionals

Taking into account the short period during which Go Away White has been recorded and the fact that most of the songs went included into the album from the first playing it proves better than any words that Bauhaus is a band of true professionals who have managed to leave aside all personal conflicts and easily return to their initial form. The first track Too Much 21St Century is remarkable for a nice rhythm and little lyrics but enough to conceive the main idea – nowadays ambitions prevail over everything. A heavier song Adrenalin is refined with lyrics in German whereas composition Undone is an example of an absolutely stunning bass line provided by David J. A hard song International Bulletproof Talent fully demonstrates Peter Murphy's vocals possibilities especially on verses and the whole composition is a classic gothic masterpiece, and Endless Summer Of The Damned makes one remember what an amazing guitarist Daniel Ash is. A slow number Saved reminds of Dead Can Dance's works at the beginning but later turns into a breathtaking, even mesmerizing gothic ballad. A great composition Black Stone Heart with sullen lyrics and whistling in the accompaniment pleases with a catchy tune, while song The Dog's A Vapour first presented to audience ten years ago sounds perfectly harmonious with the rest of the album which has obviously been recorded by musicians that know exactly well how their music should sound like.

Gothic founders will exist eternally

When twenty-five years ago Bauhaus disbanded for the first time Peter Murphy pursued solo career and the other three members formed a band Love and Rockets, and although both him and them were a success it is the four-piece best songs that the audience still remembers like for instance their eternal hit Bela Lugosi's Dead. Sullen lyrics and the soloist's splendid vocals have made the collective known to the whole world and now when it has officially claimed its disbanding there will hardly be a person sad about it for its music has never gone into the past and will not disappear with the band as it is ceasing to exist. Although album Go Away White puts a fullstop in its creative work but for those who are only discovering Bauhaus it will easily turn into a comma, and for the most faithful fans the Gothic founders will exist eternally. Thus Go Away White serves only to remind what the young beginning collectives should strive for both in the respect of the approach to music and from the professional point of view.
