Snacktime! review

Restless Barenaked Ladies

Canadian collective Barenaked Ladies, performing alternative rock, cheers the listeners with their easy-going music for about twenty years. When the musicians founded this band in 1988, they charmed Canada and the USA with their hit One Week almost at once. Since that, the artists go on to amuse their fans with almost annual releases and energetic performances. It is well known that Barenaked Ladies are good in not only composing poppy tunes and diverse arrangements, but the public also adores them for their humorous monologues and brilliant rap improvisations on the scene. After the witty release of 2007 called Barenaked Ladies Are Men, the musicians decided to make the public feel at ease again and issued the Snacktime! The album is purposed for children, but adults are sure to appreciate it too, without any doubt. The target of the work is also well-seen on the playful cover for Snacktime! created by David Hearn - member of Barenaked Ladies since 1996. The lyrics on the album are written with the usual touch of humor. With the help of bright images, the artists tell the children about many things - from ABC and figures to animals and food.

Snacktime!: a child's look at the world

It seems like each artist from Barenaked Ladies let free his inner child during the recording sessions of this album and let him have as much fun as it was possible. The disc opener is the thrilling gangster romance about uneasy relations between figures 789 - simultaneously it teaches children how to count or makes them refresh counting if they have already learned to do it. The song Ninjas has not only the up-tempo catchy tune, but also gives all the needed information about these mysterious Japanese warriors - this track, by the way, tells about the childhood of the musicians, when films about ninjas were a popular genre. The trilogy The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy I, The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy II and The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy III gave the title to the album. It narrates to the little listeners about all possible types of snacks in Canada. Country track I Can Sing radiates good mood and positive charge. The musicians also penned several humorous tracks to everyday things - like dramatic rock story Eraser and fast, retro-styled melody Drawing about the role of imagination in this hobby. The song, titled My Big Sister, raises an important theme of relatives, while in the artistic track Allergies the members of Barenaked Ladies enumerate all the possible and impossible types of allergy and its symptoms.

Barenaked Ladies are masters of re-shape

Songs from the Snacktime! could be easily written by children, not adult professional musicians - as it has the enormous amount of naughtiness and enthusiasm. However, both music and texts bare no signs of primitivism and dullness. Barenaked Ladies were very conscious about making material for their young auditory. They told children about wild animals and pets, everyday and unusual things and even some facts about themselves. The information is presented in twenty-four tracks in an easy for comprehension form. However, this disc can tell young listeners not only about the environment, but also about many musical genres - Snacktime! has elements of alternative rock and indie rock, pop of 70's, folk and even electronica. It can be said without doubt that Barenaked Ladies are the masters of re-shaping, feeling naturally in any genre and creating for all types of auditory. The Snacktime! album will be interesting to listen for all the family. Anyone, willing to let his inner child have fun, can buy the full-length Snacktime! without hesitation and get pleasure from listening to it - Canadian quintet Barenaked Ladies won't disappoint your hope for a party.
