Biography
Famous Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto, performing samba and bossa nova music, was born in 1940 in Salvador. When Astrud was seven years old, her family moved to Rio de Janeiro, and in 1959 the future singer married Joгo Gilberto, who is considered to be one of the founders of bossa nova style. That marriage predetermined Gilberto’s future, and before that she did not even think about the professional musical career.
In 1963 Astrud and her husband moved to the USA, and the same year album Getz/Gilberto was released. It included the famous composition The Girl From Ipanema, which turned out to be the singer’s first professional record. The success was incredible – in 1965 The Girl From Ipanema won the Grammy Award in the nomination Record Of The Year, and Gilberto gained the worldwide popularity. Her debut solo album titled The Astrud Gilberto Album was issued in 1965. That long play became the real hit and attracted numerous music lovers’ attention to Astrud’s creativity. The singer performed not only Brazilian songs, but also popular American compositions, including famous Bart Howard’s Fly Me To The Moon.
In seventies Gilberto tried to compose, and her own songs were enjoyed by listeners and musical experts. In 1976 Astrud’s creation titled Live Today won the Award at International Tokyo Music Festival, and that fact proved the highest level of Brazilian singer’s skills. In spite of the long and fruitful career, the performer still has plenty of fresh ideas that she realizes in her creativity. Thus the album Jungle including ten new Astrud’s songs was released in 2002.
Also the singer issued numerous compilation albums, which became wonderful presents to many Gilberto’s fans. One of the brightest compilation albums appeared in 2004 and it was titled Astrud For Lovers. That record included such unquestionable hits as World Stop Turning, Look To The Rainbow and The Shadow Of Your Smile.
