Rage Against The Machine topped UK Christmas singles chart

Dec 12, 2009
Rage Against The Machine’s single Killing In The Name has become Christmas Number One single in the UK. This annual chart is based on the sales during the week before Christmas. Rage Against The Machine went 50.000 copies ahead of main favorite – Joe McElderry, the winner of the last The X Factor show, who covered Miley Cyrus' The Climb.

Killing In The Name was originally released in 1992, but in December 2009 it became the subject of a campaign organized by Rage Against The Machine’s fans. Their goal was to take Killing In The Name on the first place in UK Christmas Singles Chart and not let the first place to go to the last winner of popular TV show The X Factor (which happens since 2005).

Organizers claimed it was a protest against commercialization of the music industry. The campaign was supported by such artists as Muse, The Prodigy, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Sex Pistols’ John Lydon and others. However, Joe McElderry was also backed by several pop-singers, such as Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole and Leona Lewis.
