Collaboration between Metallica and Lou Reed happened ''occasionally''

Metallica frontman James Hetfield spoke about upcoming album Lulu that the band recorded in collaboration with famous rock singer Lou Reed. Studio effort consists of the covers on the songs Reed has written for the musical Lulu, which is based on the plays by German writer Frank Wedekind.

According to Hetfield, they made this decision "occasionally" – at first they were going to re-recorded some of Lou Reed's previously unreleased tracks, but later Velvet Underground member came up with another idea.

"We were very interested in working with Lou. I had these giant question marks: "What's it going to be like? What's going to happen?" So it was great when he sent us the lyrics for the Lulu body of work. It was something we could sink our teeth into", claimed Hetfield.

He added: "I could take off my singer and lyricist hat and concentrate on the music part. These were very potent lyrics, with a soundscape behind them for atmosphere. Lars and I sat there with an acoustic and let this blank canvas take us where it needed to go".

Speaking about the album, Lou Reed said: "It maybe the best thing done by anyone, ever. It could create another planetary system. I'm not joking, and I'm not being egotistical".
